The Hughes Unit Group Supporters (HUGS) was formed in 2012 out of the imminent closure of The Hughes Unit, a 24/7 respite care facility for those with severe mental health issues. About eight or nine inpatients started the movement which was quickly joined by carers, relatives and those concerned in the community. Although the Hughes Unit closed HUGS continued to campaign for the return of a similar facility.
In 2014 two HUGS committee members then set up a mental health drop in centre called Harmony which still exists today and former chairman of HUGS Simon, created the Bridport MindFest, bringing together a whole host of artists and speakers on Mental Health in 2017 and 2018.
HUGS continues to campaign on maintaining and improving mental health facilities in Dorset including the return of inpatient facilities to the more rural parts of Dorset. With this website it will also signpost many of the mental health facilities within Dorset
